Elizabeth City State University's Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean, Marine & Space Science, URE OMSS, promotes professional development in students through participation in research. Research teams work closely with faculty and mentors to conduct eight-week summer programs. One such team is the Remote Sensing Team.

In 2005, the Lost Colony and Remote Sensing Team researched the suitability of settlement on three sites: Croatan, Buck Ridge, and Goshen Ridge.
